Dark Knight!
Jul. 19th, 2008 06:26 pmJust saw Dark Knight with my friend N.
It was *awesome*
I expected the Joker to be a little more over-the-top, but he wasn't. He was insane, but not out-of-control. He had just enough restraint and self awareness to make him truly dangerous and frightening. Heath Ledger played it perfectly.
But with all the Joker-centric buzz about this movie (and I fully admit, the Joker was well-worth talking about), the performances of everyone else were kind of lost during promotion. And those, too, were amazing. I was especially impressed by Gordon, but Harvey Dent was a fascinating foil for Batman.
I was hoping for better from Maggie Gyllenhaal. I generally love her as an actress, but her character was just completely un-fascinating. I almost wish they'd kept Katie Holmes, who does the sweet and innocent idealist/almost-damsel thing better. I feel like by replacing Katie with Maggie, they were trying to make Rachel a stronger character than she was.
The movie was visually stunning, even though I didn't manage to see it in IMAX. I *loved* recognizing the backdrop of Chicago, and sitting in a theater 2 blocks away from the street where the underground chase scene was filmed. It's definitely a movie to see again.
