I was underwhelmed by the first episode of Glee this season.

Basically all we did was rehash some major themes from last season, such as:

•Rachel Berry is a self-involved attention hog, and insincere to boot. The only part of this arc I actually liked was when Finn actually displayed some stones and told her to stop lying.

•Will Schuester is a jerk. Largely because he thinks of himself as such a good guy, and he gets so superior about it, and then he does all these petty, cruel, and/or insensitive things so thoughtlessly and with this sort of careless arrogance - and then later in the episode he'll realize he was wrong and be appropriately contrite which is all well and good until he does the same damn thing all over again, because even though he's recognized his cruelness he has made no effort to change. In the immortal words of McFly: sorry's not good enough, Schue.

•The Cheerleaders are catty and manipulative, except for Brittany, who is the mouth piece through which other people are catty and manipulative.

Narratively, it's re-setting the scene for a new season and essentially putting everything back to where it was in the first place. I'm left so cold by this episode because I don't want to watch the same season over again.

There were a few things I did like.

I always love when Becky is around, and am so grateful that she's an actual character and not just random stunt they pulled out for A Very Special Disability Episode.

I love that Tina actually dumped Artie for being an actually awful boyfriend, and Tina's line about how Mike Chang actually tries to be into what Tina's into... like Mike's abs.

(Confidentially, I'm pretty into Mike's abs, too. I know, you're all shocked.)

The other thing that's just utterly confusing to me about the fake TV high school where Glee exists is that there is NO mention of grades. Seriously, it's a new school year and instead of turning to a huge pool of malleable freshmen unsure of their place in the world, all they can find is two transfer students? Clubs stay alive by recruiting Frosh!

Also, is it just me, or was it a little more palpable than usual that all of the songs were recorded separately in a sound studio, sound-corrected, and dubbed over?

But tomorrow night is Episode 2! And despite all its problems, Glee still gets me excited. So that's a point in its favor. And I've also just learned that DARREN CRISS IS JOINING THE CAST! Possibly as Kurt's first boyfriend? That part is not confirmed, but what IS confirmed is that HARRY FREAKIN' POTTER is joining the cast of Glee!
