mollyporter: (Doctor Who TARDIS)

Just in case you were wondering, the Weeping Angels? Still the most terrifying creature in the entire Whoniverse.

Oh River Song. I think I like River Song? (Not as a person, mind. As a character. As a person I don't like her one bit.) She has a dynamic with the Doctor that's unlike any other relationship of his - and it's due to the fact that she knows more about their relationship than he does. She's got a HUGE one-up on him by knowing how they met and what the nature of their relationship is. He knows her future, yes. But only she has the context that future fits into. What's nice about her is that she throws the doctor off his game, she makes him unsure of himself.

But it's easy for her character to be overdone. Schooling the Doctor on the stabilizers was funny, but the criticism of his landing, I felt, was just one step too far. I know we're going to find out more about her in the future. But unless she's a Time Lord, too, there is no reason for her to know more about flying the TARDIS than the Doctor.

I also think she was brought in a little too early in Eleven's run. She's an undermining character by nature, which is what's fun about her. But for that reason, she works far better with a Doctor who's had more that 3 episodes to establish himself.

I'm pretty sure I like her. She makes me curious, which is more important than liking her for a show. I just feel like the timing was off.

Moffy, Moffy, Moffy. I love you. Really, I do. But for the same reason it's too early for River Song, you shouldn't have done the Angels yet. The Angels are seriously Season Finale caliber villains. Blink has gone down in history as one of the most frightening and best done episodes in Who history. They don't belong at this point in the season! They don't belong right after you brought the Daleks back. In WWII, which last time was featured in the BRILLIANT Empty Child/Doctor Dances arc. You're making this season feel far too much like "reliving the greatest hits of Seasons Past" instead of being new and fresh and exciting. I mean, by all means revisit! I love seeing the new approaches to old characters and creatures! But do it more like the Ood. The Ood were BRILLIANTLY done.

I just want Amy and Eleven to have a chance to establish themselves and do their own thing, confront their own enemies and explore their own worlds. I thought 5.02 The Beast Below was WONDERFUL, but then we got two episodes back to back with these firmly canonized enemies.

Timing issues aside, this was a fantastic episode. I feel a little like I should hold off posting about it until next week, because the arc isn't done yet. But OH MAN, THE ANGELS. And I loved Amy Pond's brilliant scene where she was trapped with it. The goofy little winking one eye at a time so not to blink, the terror in her eyes, it was fantastic. I'm eagerly anticipating next week.
